Take Better Pictures Close to Home

Close to Home

Sometimes you don't have the time or money to travel to a far location for a photo adventure.  The good news is you don't have to travel far to make great photographs.  Great photographic locations are nearer that you think.  They may even be in your own back yard.

What?

Yep, your back yard can offer you some wonderful photo opportunities.  Think about the flowers that you grow.  You can make great pictures of the flowers that bloom in your backyard throughout the summer.  Flowers attract butterflies and birds.  You can make stunning pictures of butterflies and birds. Don't forget your bird feeder either!  The possibilities are endless.

Check out local parks and nature preserves

I used to live in the middle of a fairly large suburban city.  One of my favorite places to shoot was a local nature park about a mile from my home. There was this wonderful haven with nature trails and a beautiful stream running through it right in the middle of the city, .   I took a wide variety of shots there.  I took landscapes, closeups and even tried some abstract shots using the reflections in a pond.  The time I spent in the park was very satisfying.

Don’t forget downtown  architecture

If you live in a town with an old downtown area, you have a wealth of photographic opportunities.  Each building has its own character.  Try a variety of photographic perspectives.  Get in close and take photographs of the unique architectural features of the buildings.  Work on a variety of compositions.  You could easily spend a day shooting in an old downtown.

Take the time to imagine the possibilities

When you select a location to shoot, spend time doing a “walk around” to evaluate photographic opportunities. A walk around is a great way to spend an afternoon.  Taking the time to do this will open up a whole new world to photograph in each location.  The walk around gives you the opportunity to visualize the photographic opportunities.

Using these locations near your home will give you an opportunity to hone your skills.  You can practice the basics of composition and exposure. You can experiment using different points of view.  You can learn to shoot in a variety of lighting conditions.  You can follow the rules and break the rules.  You can learn so much by shooting close to home.

Give yourself this opportunity.  You will be glad you did.

See you next week!
